Privacy Policy
The short version. We store your learning progress (saved words, flashcard reviews, what you watched) so it follows you across devices, and we collect usage analytics to improve the app. Videos you add from your own links are private to you. We don’t sell your data or use it for advertising.
Who we are
Capiñol (“the app”, “we”) is made by Aleksandr Borisov, trading as Appshift. For any privacy question or request, write to privacy@appshift.xyz.
Using Capiñol without an account
On first launch the app creates an anonymous account identified only by a random ID, so your progress can be saved. If you later sign in with Apple or Google, that anonymous account becomes your account and your progress is kept.
What we collect
| Data | Why | Where it’s stored |
|---|---|---|
| Account: a random user ID; your email address and name if you sign in with Apple or Google (Apple lets you hide your email) | To save your progress and let you sign in on another phone | Supabase (our database and sign-in provider) |
| Learning data: your app language, saved words, flashcard review history and schedule, watch history, bookmarks, rewatch progress, minutes studied per day | Your vocabulary, reviews, streak and progress across devices | Supabase |
| Videos you add: the YouTube links you paste, and when you added them | To turn them into lessons for you and apply daily limits | Supabase. Only you can see them |
| Purchases: subscription status and purchase history from the App Store, linked to your user ID | To unlock Capiñol Pro on your devices | RevenueCat, and your Pro status in Supabase. We never see your payment details |
| Usage events: screens and actions (for example words tapped and saved, cards swiped, videos finished, paywall viewed, purchases); device model, iOS version, app version, language | To see what helps people learn and where the app is confusing | PostHog (analytics) |
Videos and lessons
- Playback. Videos play in YouTube’s official embedded player. When you watch, Google may collect data under the Google Privacy Policy.
- Building a lesson. When you add a link, we look up the video’s public details with the YouTube Data API, fetch its public captions through Supadata, and send the caption text to Anthropic (Claude) to translate and explain it. Only the video’s own text is sent, nothing about you.
- Private to you. A video you add never appears in the feed, search or examples for anyone else. If another person adds the same public video, they get the same lesson without learning anything about you.
- Word explanations. When you ask why a word is used, the sentence it appears in is sent to Anthropic to write the explanation.
Emails
If you sign in with an email address, we may send you emails from capi@mail.appshift.xyz:
- About your account and subscription: a welcome note, when a free trial starts, a reminder before it ends, and billing problems.
- Tips and offers: a nudge if you haven’t started or haven’t studied for a while, when a streak ends, new clips, and discounts. Turn these off any time in Capiñol: Profile → Settings → Notifications.
Every email has a link to unsubscribe from all of them. To decide what to send, we use your study days, your app language and your subscription status. Emails are delivered by Resend.
What stays on your phone
- Spanish pronunciation is spoken by iOS on your device.
- Display settings and a local copy of your words, so the app works offline.
What we don’t do
- We don’t track you across other apps or websites, and we don’t use advertising identifiers.
- We don’t sell your personal data or share it for advertising.
- We don’t record your screen, your voice or what you type outside the app’s own fields.
Legal bases (EEA, UK)
We process account, learning and purchase data to provide the service you asked for (contract). Analytics are processed on the basis of our legitimate interest in improving Capiñol. You can delete your data at any time.
Service providers
- Supabase — database and authentication.
- PostHog — product analytics.
- RevenueCat — subscription management.
- Resend — delivery of emails to signed-in users.
- Anthropic — translation and explanations of caption text.
- Supadata — fetching public YouTube captions.
- Google — the YouTube player and YouTube Data API, and Sign in with Google if you choose it.

These providers process data on our behalf under their own data protection terms. Some of them store data in the United States; where required we rely on standard contractual clauses for international transfers.
How long we keep data
We keep your account and learning data while your account exists. Analytics events are kept for up to 24 months. When you delete your account, your account, learning data and the videos you added are deleted immediately from our database; residual copies in backups expire within 30 days. Lessons built from public videos may be kept, as they contain nothing about you.
Your choices and rights
- Delete your account anytime in Capiñol: Profile → Your account → Delete account.
- You can ask us for a copy of your data, to correct it, or to delete it, by writing to privacy@appshift.xyz. Depending on where you live (for example the EEA, UK, California or Brazil), you may also have the right to object, restrict processing, or complain to your local data protection authority.
Children
Capiñol is not intended for children under 13 (or under 16 where local law requires). We don’t knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has created an account, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Changes
If we change this policy in a meaningful way, we’ll update the date above and tell you in the app.
